BASIC MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

(2002 admission onwards – Supplementary / Improvement)

Answer all questions.

Part A

1. Explain about closed and open systems.
2. What is meant by specific heat at constant volume and specific heat at constant pressure?
3. Explain the advantages of four-stroke engine over two-stroke engine.
4. Explain the working of a simple carburetor with the help of a neat sketch.
5. Derive an expression for the length of a belt in open belt drives.
6. What is meant by velocity ratio in gear wheels?
7. List the advantages of hydroelectric power plants.
8. What is meant by Cogeneration in thermal power plants?
9. What are the properties that moulding sand should possess to produce a good casting.
10. Explain with the help of a neat sketch, the working of a four-high rolling mill.
(10 X 4 = 40 marks)

Part B

11. (a) A spherical balloon of 0.5 m. diameter contains air at a pressure of 500 kPa. The diameter increases to 0.55 m. in a reversible process during which pressure is proportional to diameter. Determine the work done by the air in the balloon during this process.
Or
(b) Explain adiabatic, isothermal and polytropic processes. Derive an expression for pdv work done during a reversible polytropic process.

12. (a) Discuss about IC engine cooling systems.
Or
(b) An engine operating on Carnot cycle between temperature limits of 200 C and 8000 C rejects heat at the rate of 200 kJ/S. Determine the :
(i) Ideal thermal efficiency of the cycle.
(ii) Power output of the engine.
13. (a) Explain the following with regard to a gear wheel :
(i) Addendum.
(ii) Dedendum.
(iii) Pressure angle.
(iv) Path of contact.
(v) Pitch circle.
(vi) Interference.
Or
(b) Two parallel shafts connected by a crossed belt, are provided with pulleys 480 mm. and 640 mm. in diameter. The distance between the centre lines of the shafts is 3 m. Find by how much the length of the belt should be changed if it is desired to alter the rotation of the driven shaft.

14. (a) Explain the working of a hydroelectric power plant with the help of a schematic diagram.
Or
(b) Explain the methods of compounding of steam turbines.

15. (a) Discuss about casting defects and its causes.
Or
(b) With the help of a diagram, explain electric arc welding.
