1. List any four varieties of Portland cement with their uses.
2. Give an account of different types of steel.
3. What are common defects in timber?
4. What are the functions of foundations in buildings?
5. What are difference between English bond and Flemish bond?
6. Explain the bearing capacity of soil.
7. Explain the difference between one way reinforced slab and two way reinforced concrete slab.
8. What are the two systems of designating the magnetic bearing of a line?
9. Sketch a typical traffic island for a city traffic.
10. Explain site plan preparation for a residential building.
(10 X 4 = 40 marks)

Part B

11. (a) Explain the term workability. What are the factors affecting workability? Briefly explain the tests for determining workability.
Or
(b) Explain “wet process” in the manufacture of cement.

12. (a) What are the qualities of good bricks? What are the common tests carried out on bricks.
Or
(b) Sketch a roof truss of steel for a span of 12 m. for an industrial building. Assume all datas required.

13. (a) Explain the plate load test for the determination of bearing capacity of soil.
Or
(b) What important points are to be kept in view while carrying out rubble work? Name different classes of rubble masonry. How is rubble work carried out?

14. (a) What all instruments and accessories are used in chain survey ? Explain chain and compass traversing.
Or
(b) Determine the included angles for a traverse ABCDA taken in clockwise direction. Given the forebearings of the lines free from local attraction AB – 400, BC – 700, CD – 210, DA – 280. Apply the check.

15. (a) Explain the construction of a septic tank and soak pit for 20 users. Draw the plan and cross-section.

(b) Explain the following :-
(i) Exterior and interior open air spaces as per KMBR 1999.
(ii) Traffic signs.
(iii) Structure of a road pavement.
(iv) Differential leveling.
