B Ed and M Ed courses are now going to be of 2 years duration. This decision was declared after a meeting held on September 15, 2014. The meeting took place between human resource development (HRD) minister Smriti Irani and vice-chancellors of more than 250 central and state universities.

Smriti Irani also discussed the measures to bring the courses at par with humanities and science curricula in universities. According to Vice Chancellors, the current one-year format set for B.Ed and M.Ed programmes is insufficient to train teachers.

A committee set up by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) said in July 2014, that changes are going to be implemented from academic year 2015-16 and will be ended in 2019-20, continuing till five consecutive years.

To improvise the quality of teachers’ education, the NCTE signed an MoU with the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) for evaluation of training programmes.

In the meeting between the HRD ministry, the UGC, the NCERT and the NCTE training for teachers information and communication technology (ICT) was also discussed. Earlier, PM Modi had advised teachers in his September 5 address to train in ICT so that they can further impart it to students.
