SHIMLA: High drama was witnessed in Himachal Pradesh University on Wednesday with four girls being nominated to Student Central Association, a first in the history of the university, and later all four of them refusing to take up the responsibility.

The university has been witnessing protests after the authorities decided to discontinue direct elections to the student body. Not giving in to students' demand for direct elections, the process of nominations was started from September 15 and concluded on September 24 with a total 77 representatives getting nominated on the basis of their percentage in exams and participation in cultural and sports activities.

While Jyoti Sharma of 3{+r}{+d} semester of department of bio-science (botany) with 80% marks was nominated as president of SCA, Preeti Sharma of 3{+r}{+d} semester of mathematics department with 72% marks was nominated vice-president. For the post of secretary, Damini Jhinha of economics department, with 90.4% marks, was nominated while Pallawi of department of chemistry, with 85% marks, was nominated as joint secretary.

HPU's dean, students welfare (DSW) Prof M S Chauhan said that the university had formed a committee to look after the nomination process and working of SCA. "The entire nomination process was constitutional. It is a matter of pride that all nominated leaders are girls," he added. HPU's pro-vice chancellor Prof Rajinder Singh Chauhan said that the criterion for SCA nomination was merit of students. "Meritorious students would help raise issues related to academics only. That is why SCA was constituted by nomination of meritorious students," he said.

However, in the evening all four nominated candidates confirmed that they would not take up any posts as they were not asked about it. The newly constituted SCA would be formally announced on September 25 but the four members said they would formally resign the same day. "With highest merit, girls have grabbed all the four posts of SCA. Hopefully, the environment would be calm in the university now," Chauhan said.

When contacted, Damini Jinha of economics department, who has been appointed SCA secretary, said that the university appointed her without her consent. "I am favoring the protest against fee hike and I am completely against nomination-based SCA. SCA should be elected directly," she added.

Pallawi of chemistry department, who was nominated joint secretary, said she was not interested in politics as she had come to the university to study. "University authorities have written my name for the post of joint secretary without my prior permission, which I am not willing to accept," she added.
