CBSE schools to take up clean-up drive

MUMBAI: The CBSE will participate in the ministry of human resource development's Swacch Bharat Swacch Vidyalaya Campaign between September 25 and October 31. Schools will have to take up a programme for cleanliness during this period.

"We need to inculcate the spirit of cleanliness in all our children from the initial years of schooling, so that they appreciate the value of good, clean and hygienic living," said Sadhana Parashar, director, CBSE. Schools can choose a range of activities-talking to children on cleanliness with regard to the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, cleaning classrooms, laboratories, libraries, toilets and drinking water areas, kitchen sheds and playgrounds. The board has also asked schools to conduct essay and painting competitions, debates, contests, son8gs and skits on cleanliness and hygiene. City schools are, however, looking to do more than this. "Taking the initiative beyond what is prescribed, we are asking students to come up with solutions for waterlogging, which is a problem in the area around the school," said Avnita Bir, principal, R N Podar School, Santa Cruz.

Schools will be awarded between Rs 25,000 and Rs 1 lakh depending on their sanitation ratings as of October 31. tnn But schools will have to continue to emphasize the message of the Swacch Vidyalaya Abhiyan up to August 15, 2015, by organizing film shows, model activities on hygiene etc.
