CHANDIGARH: Panjab University's Institute of Hotel Management and Tourism (UIHMT) on Wednesday organized a workshop on Chandigarh Architecture at Gandhi Bhawan on campus.

The day-long workshop focused on sensitizing students of tourism and hospitality about the technical aspects as well as unique feature of architecture in Chandigarh. Veteran architect and member of the core team of Le Corbusier, S D Sharma was the keynote speaker. Former PU fellow and PU alumnus S S Virdi addressed the valedictory session. "The event is part of the series of events that are being organized during World Tourism Day Celebrations 2014," said UIHMT director RK Gupta.

Quoting the example of Chandigarh and motivating students to undertake entrepreneurial endeavours in tourism and hospitality industry, Virdi said, "It is very important to understand the core spirit behind a destination and the same can be helpful in developing a unique business plan."

Sharma shared the thoughts and ideas behind the architecture of various buildings of Chandigarh. Sujay Sengupta, faculty with Chandigarh College of Architecture was also a resource person in the workshop while PU's executive engineer RK Rai and architect Harpreet Singh also shared the concepts behind the architecture of PU buildings.

In the afternoon session, students were taken for a field visit to Capitol Complex under the guidance of two architecture experts - Shubha Jain and Akanksha Garg from Chandigarh College of Architecture.
