LUCKNOW: Lucknow University witnessed poor turnout of students during the on-campus counselling for admissions to 14 postgraduate courses held on Thursday. Only 102 admissions happened on 132 vacant seats in these 14 courses which include biochemistry, chemistry, education, physics, botany, microbiology, plant science, psychology, Urdu, zoology, Hindi, Sanskrit, mass communication and geography. A total of 650 candidates were called. On Friday, admissions will be conducted on 193 seats in nine courses.

"We had called students five times the number of vacant seats. Bur hardly 100 seats could be filled up," said an official. LU shifted from online to offline counselling after failing to fill up seats in 23 courses through the selected merit list. In yet another 21 courses, university has opened direct admission for candidates whose name appears in the overall merit list.

The delay in admissions is a key reason for shortage of students, said officials. "The merit has gone for a toss. It's mid- September and university is struggling to fill up its seats," said a senior professor.

Professors say even if admissions close down by September end, there would be hardly any time for teaching. Add to this is the long list of holidays due to festivals. With this, mandatory 90 days of teaching seems impossible, said professors.
