BERHAMPUR: Berhampur University has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Aarhus University, Denmark, for cooperation and exchange of fellows in research in areas of mutual academic interest.

One of the research fellows of Denmark's second oldest university joined Berhampur University on Friday to work on a research programme in the southern part of the state as a part of the MoU.

"The researcher from Denmark will conduct research though the South Odisha Culture Study Centre, set up by Berhampur University," said university registrar Manmath Padhy.

Fellows from Berhampur University are also likely to visit Aarhus University soon as a part of the exchange of fellow programmes, Padhy added. The MoU would boost collaborative research and other academic areas in both universities.

Aarhus University is the third institute with which Berhampur University has signed an MoU within a year. Earlier, the university has signed an MoU with the Institute of Asian and Oriental Studies, University of Tubingen, Germany, and National Institute of Rural Development (NIRD), Hyderabad, an autonomous body under the Union ministry of rural development.

The varsity has already launched three add-on courses in collaboration with NIRD as a part of the MoU, said post-graduate council chairman P K Padhy.

The faculty members from NIRD visit the university as resource persons frequently. The university has also undertaken several extension activities in collaboration with NIRD in fishing villages near Gopalpur, sources said.

Two other foreign universities have also shown interest in signing MoUs with the varsity, university sources said.

University of Groningen, one of the oldest universities in Netherlands, and the University of Abomey-Calavia, Benin, are likely sign MoUs with Berhampur University, sources said.

"These foreign universities have already shown interest and the MoUs are likely to be signed with them soon," said a senior faculty member of the university.

"The university will get an image boost with foreign universities and reputed institutes of the country working in collaboration with Berhampur University," he stated.
